When approached in the right way, visiting the dentist should be as non-threatening and positive an experience for your children as going to swimming lessons or sports training.
At Sunshine Smiles Dental in Coolum we’ve created a calm and friendly environment to help ensure that each of your child’s appointments becomes a positive experience. See our fees page for children's dentistry prices.
Ideally we like to first see children at around their first birthday, but any time in their pre-primary years is a good time to begin their regular dental checkups. This allows us to observe if their oral development is on the right track, and provides an opportunity for us to offer ongoing care and brushing tips. (Many parents are surprised to learn that baby teeth play an important role in correct jaw growth and development, and their care may prevent the need for later orthodontic treatment.)
We provide a friendly, non-invasive atmosphere and Dr Vinny is extremely gentle, and very child-focussed. Because we work to make your child’s first visit easy and enjoyable, this helps to overcome any fears, and makes the next visit easier for us all.
To help your child’s first visit to be a positive experience, we suggest that you explain that the dentist wants to be a friend who will help care for his or her teeth: "At the first visit the dentist will count your teeth, clean them with a special, tickling toothbrush, and take some pictures of your mouth."
Never tell a child that the dentist will not hurt - as this may have never even entered the child's mind - but rather say that the dentist will be very gentle.
Having an established relationship with a Children’s dentist will make every visit more comfortable. We recommend that you bring your children into Sunshine Smiles at Coolum Beach every six months, as this regularity will help them to become accustomed to the surroundings, sounds, smells, and procedures. On each visit we will examine your child's mouth including:
- Hard and soft palate
- Floor of the mouth
- Lips, cheeks and tongue, and
- Tonsil area
We will of course, check the teeth and gums, as well as the growth and development of the head. We will also evaluate the impact of any habit (e.g. lip or thumb sucking) that may influence the development of attractive teeth.
At Sunshine Smiles we are invested in your child’s long term dental health, and know that by explaining any issues and possible solutions to you, you will have the information you need to make the very best decisions from the options available.
We offer a full suite of dental services for children including cleaning, examinations, preventative fissure sealants and fillings, and x-rays. And because we know that kids will be kids, and accidents happen - we also tend to broken, chipped or knocked teeth.
We're a Bulk Billing Dentist under the Child Dental Benefit Scheme (CBDS)
The Federal Government introduced the bulk billing initiative under Medicare in 2014. For eligible children aged between 2 and 17 years, it provides up to $1000 in dental treatment benefits over a two year cycle for each child. Eligibility for the CBDS is assessed by the Department of Human Services, and to check your bulk billing eligibility we suggest you contact the Department on 132 001.
