When the contents of a tooth’s pulp chamber has been damaged through injury, infection or disease, having root canal treatment can often save the tooth.

The pulp chamber contains pulp, blood vessels, and nerve endings (which is why toothache is often the indicator for the need for root canal work).

If any infection is not treated, a dental abscess may form, leading to swelling and infection of the jaw bone. When this occurs the only alternative to root canal therapy is removal of the tooth and the possible subsequent need for a dental implant or bridge work.

Symptoms of pulp disease or damage

As mentioned, a diseased tooth pulp may lead to infection or inflammation. Symptoms may include:

  • spontaneous or unprovoked pain
  • pain or sensitivity to hot and cold foods and drinks
  • loose tooth
  • gum swelling near the tooth
  • swelling of the face

It is possible for the pulp to be diseased without any of these symptoms, but it will be detected through dental x-rays or special tests.
